Letter from Interested Party
Hi,
I have an Australian Shepherd that is extremely well behaved around all
people, very loving and bouncy.
The problem is he isn't trained, but he is
intelligent and would probably be easily trained. We were wondering exactly
what sort of options exist for him in movies/commercials/etc as far as what
type of things are dogs generally used for as well as the amount being paid
for use of dogs in such endeavors. He would be particularly suited to jumping
around, being petted, chasing things, etc. He would like actors of all ages.
Any information you could send would be appreciated so that we know if we feel
it is worth our while to sign him on with a company.
Thanks! Joe
ANSWER:Dear Joe
I get as many as 20 emails each day concerning this question. I cannot answer
each one but I can answer here for all to see! The following goes for any
animal you might be thinking is an animal actor.
Your Talented Animal depends on you and your interest and ability to get the
publicity needed to get your Furry or Feathered Friend Discovered!
Opportunities are often a shot in the dark! Many owners of wonderful pets hope
to get their animal friend on TV or in the movies.
First realize that what you think is a great adventure for your pet, might be
boring, frightening or just uncomfortable for your wonderful animal friend.
Most pets prefer your lap, your home, your love to strange people and surroundings.
This is not always true however. Consult your pet!
Movie, TV and commercial agencies usually work with Talent Agents that own and
keep their own animals, some work with Talent Agencies, who work with other
peoples animals, while others go to a location, search for an appropriate pet
with a proud owner, many who will "work for free" for the opportunity of
getting Fido on TV! Some find animals in shelters to do the job for them.
Honestly, it's a gamble that you will ever be called.
Pets that live in a high Movie,TV and Commercial Traffic area and are pets
that are highly trained are more likely to be called for a job because they
are living where the action is and because of their unique ability to work
with a crew and actors to get the shot needed in the shortest amount of time.
Beautiful animals that can be carried around and are friendly are quite common
and, unfortunately, often can be borrowed from someone in the area.
Most animals that get work follow hand commands, are trained to do
tricks and are very easy to work with, as are their owners. Pet owners know they
may never be called but at least they are available if the opportunity presents
itself. When and if they are called, it is an enjoyable adventure and the owner
of the pet may make anywhere from $0 to $2,500 or more according to what is
expected of the Animal Actor, where the shoot is taking place and how long the
shoot lasts. Make the best deal you can for your talented animals, then take
your pet and do the shoot. You, the pet owner should collect the money at the
time of the shoot. You choose how much money you would need to be considered for
making an appearance and staying until your pets part of the shoot is finished.
Making a living off of a talented pet does not happen often! If a pet becomes
a star, or popular with a certain advertiser, the creator of that product will
want control over that animal so they can use it when needed. That is just a fact!
Seldom does a loving owner even want to think about that situation.
Pets have been asked to do photo shoots, TV shows, movies, and commercials.
The pets that are chosen should really enjoy the limelight. An unhappy animal
isn't worth any amout of money! Here are a few of the things pets have
performed for the sake of being an animal actor:
Laying on silk sheets and looking beautiful, eating LOTS of cat food, jumping
into a strangers arms (over and over again), being wrapped in first aid bandages
by small children, sitting in a gift wrapped box and leaping out on command,
a cat being carried around in a basket by a big dog she didn't know, being tied
to a rabbit, mouse, duck, and a huge dog, then acting like they were all going
in different directions, then snuggeling up together. In most cases an animal
is not the main focus of the shot, they are almost like a prop and therefore
the company that is hiring usually aren't willing to pay huge amounts for the
time you and your animal put in. They are interested in getting a good product
for as little as they can. They will also look for animals in the area they
have pre-chosen for the shot, not bring the shot to you!
All of these factors means you may or may not get the opportunity to have your
pet in a commercial, TV show or movie. There are many animals to choose from and
really want well trained animals or if they are willing to work with non-trained
critters, they want them really cheap. Realize your pet would most likely prefer
being your little darling rather than see his or her face on an ad or show.
Think seriously about your pets welfare and happiness before you spend the
money, time and effort it takes to have a Show Pet!
Sincerely,
Kay Cox
