Here's a note forwarded from Annette regarding Benjamin Goodson of
SC/MS/LA. Please feel free to share and discuss such information on the
list; unlike some surnames, Goodson, at least in the United States, has
a fairly narrow geographical distribution (southern states) and it's
likely that most of us tie together somewhere along the line.
While in this case I know of no relation with Benjamin Goodson, one of
his descendants (gr-grandchild, I think), Willis Marshall Goodson,
married in Arkansas a granddaughter of my ancestor James Goodson of
Autauga Co., AL, who was of the Darlington Co., SC family.

While researching my Ratcliff family I discovered that they were somehow
related to the Goodson family. Among the many old family letters in the
possession of a Great Aunt, was one that mentioned "Joshua Goodson our
relation". So while doing Ratcliff family research, a hunt for the Goodso
n
family was included.
It was in Franklin Co., Miss. that my John Ratcliff applied in 1832 for a
Revolutionary Pension. His application was witnessed by one Benjamin
Goodson. Benjamin Goodson had likewise applied for a Revol. War Pension
which was witnessed by my John Ratcliff. Here was the Goodson tie, they
were both Revol. War Soldiers who knew each other in SC, witnessing each
others Franklin Co., Miss. pension applications
One day a Goodson descendant and I got in touch. His name is Robert Taylo r
35447 Ivy Lane Yucaipa, Calif. 92399. We combined efforts and have made
some real progress on both the Goodson and Ratcliff families. So let me t ry
to give you a brief story:
The three brothers, all born in the early 1750s, William, Benjamin, and
James Goodson served in the SC Revol. War. Their mother was Rachel
Ratcliff. After the War they migrated south into Wilkinson (Pulaski-Lauri n
Co. area) Georgia, and then onward to Mississippi. They a half brother by
the name of Jethro Butler. Rachel Ratcliff Goodson's husband had died and
she then married **her deceased sister's widower** or her brother-in-law.
From that union was born Jethro Butler in 1760. This Jethro Butler
(b:c1760) was actually Jethro Butler the III. There was a ton of Jethro
Butlers so we always identify them by birthdate to keep them straight.
Anyway, Robert Taylor descends from Benjamin Goodson. His brothers, Willi am
and James, also married and had children. So needless to say there were a
number of Goodsons.
Benjamin Goodson first married c1786 SC to Elizabeth. She evidently died
and then he married Emily Dorothy Mills 21 Mar 1809 GA. Benjamin Goodson,
along with his brothers and the Butlers, was in Marion and Lawrence Co.,
Miss prior to going to Franklin Co., Miss where he is listed on the 1820
Census. In about 1840 he moved to Homer, La. - Claiborne Parish where he
died 26 May 1851. He was literally (at least) 100 years old! As a result
of his longevity, many grand and great grandchildren had memories of him.
Since at least Benjamin Goodson was living in Franklin Co., Miss. during t he
time that your Mary Polly Goodson marriage took place, I assure you will t ie
into this Goodson family. I am sure when you write to Robert Taylor he wi ll
be shocked that we have not traded off family group sheets after all this
time. Quite honestly, our focus had been on going back further in our
mutual line.
Anyway, what I do have is a xerox of the Benjamin Goodson family Bible.
Although it is very hard to read, I do see MARY Goodson was born August 18 th
1804. Could this be your Mary? I am sure Robert could tell you right off
whether it is or not. The record shows: Elizabeth Goodson b:1789, Rhoda
Goodson b:1790,
____? b:1792, ____? b:1795, ____? b:1797, then Mary b:1804, Rebecca b:181 0,
William Wesley b:1812, Joshua b:1813, Caleb b:1816, Gabriel b:1818, Matild a
b:1820, Rachel b:1822, Joseph b:1825, John b:1826, Cascandra? b:1830. Of
course these all have full dates. I know that David m: Elizabeth Bell, an d
Rhode m: John Slaughter. There was an Aaron, Moses and a Benjamin Jr. wit h
those ?dates.
I would call all my oldest relatives and gather some information and
definitely write to Mr. Taylor. I would
also bookmark the following page as you may be referring to it more than y ou
think:
RATCLIFF: http://www.thenet.net/~sigmar/ratcliff/sam.html
You've just heard about 15 years of hunting condensed down.
The website is the current research on the family and Mr. Taylor has just
added a great deal to it recently.
If you do tie in, plan to put together family group sheets for him as a ne w
Ratcliff book is in the works.
The old book can be seen by a link on the above site.
Do keep me posted!!

Here are some Bertie Co., NC deeds that I found most interesting. Note tha t
Jethro Butler married into the Goodson family and that William & Mary
Goodson are the ones of most interest to me! Note the Whitfield and
Williams as well.
Thanks!

General Notes for Child Edward 'Dinkley' Warren
Hugh is not proven here yet. Only listed as a place holder until furth er researched.
I though of placing Hugh with the Hugh Warren/Anne Hesketh family. But An ne
died in 1696 and her son (also named Hugh) died young.
I figured; as a start; perhaps one of Hugh Warren's brothers (from Judge J ohn Warren)
passed the name along. I believe that Edward Dinkley Warren's may have h ad a son
named Hugh Warren. Again further research is needed to link this family f rom MD, VA
to England.
General Notes for Child Hugh Warren
Henry de Langtree gave Bradley to Hugh son of Robert de Haydock, rect or of Standish; Kuerden MSS. iii, W 26. It was perhaps the estate in Stand ish settled by fine in 1304; Final Conc. i, 204. In Kuerden MSS. vi, fo l. 96, are a number of short notes of Standish of Duxbury deeds relati ng to acquisitions of land in Standish by Hugh de Haydock (Standish) and h is successors. Bradley was in 1471 in the possession of Christopher son a nd heir of James Standish; no. 101.
A 'manor of Bradley,' of tenure unknown, was held by Thomas Standish of Du xbury in 1517, being occupied by his mother Alice; Duchy of Lanc. Inq. p. m. v, no. 11; see also Lancs. Inq. p.m. (Rec. Soc. Lancs. and Ches.), ii i, 398.
Hugh Cooper, the benefactor of Chorley, records in his will (1682) th at he had purchased Bradley from Sir Richard Standish; he bequeath ed it to his grandson Hugh Warren.

General Notes (Husband)
Descrepancy on William's death date. Union Cemetery records indicate
a death o 3 November 1901, and Family records of John and Jeanette
Pelham have this date as 3 November 1903.
General Notes for Child Isaac John Calvin Warren
Isaac John Calvin Warren is living with his father in the 1870 census.
Either Matilda (Skaggs) Warren and Isaac John Calvin Warren divorced
before the 1870 census, or Matilda (Skaggs) Warren died before the 1870
census
General Notes for Child Israel Dotson Warren
Union Cemetery records list Israel born 1 Feb 1855 and died 27 Dec
1950.
This is in conflict with other souce records.
Family records of John and Jeanette Pellham indicate Israel's birth at
1 Feb 1854 and death on 27 Dec 1915.
General Notes for Child Rebecca Eveline Warren
Rebecca Eveline (Evenline) was the 4th of 8 children. Her father was
the Reverend William Marion Warren and her mother Narcissa Cribbens.
During the time of the Civil War, William moved his family to Missouri
for two years, then returned to Arkansas. It was stated that he moved
his family to Missouri because he didn't believe in Americans killing
one another. Apparently Missouri didn't draft for the Civil War and
Arkansas did.
(Information from the Warren Family Historian Newsletter), various
issues.
General Notes for Child Jeremiah Nathaniel Warren
There is a Nathan in the Kentucky death index that would have been
born in 1862\63. He died in 1957, resident of Green county.
