Grone Family Page

My mother's parents were Ernest and Dorothy (Meyer) Grone.  They had a great life farming a few miles outside of Wayne, Nebraska.

Ernest Carl Grone, the son of Bernhard and Bertha Koester Grone, was the second son, sixth child born Jan 27, 1911 on a farm near Wayne, Nebraska.  He was baptized at the Theophilus Church, now the church museum in Winside, Nebraska.  He attended rural school district #69.  On Feb. 22, 1934 he was united in marriage to Dorothy Marie Meyer.  They were married in her parents home in Wayne, Nebraska.  Her parents Mr. William August and Dorothea (Dora) Roeber Meyer, four brothers and one sister lived in Dixon County until retiring to Wayne.  Ernest and Dorothy farmed in the Wayne area.  Two of their children attended the rural school District #69. The farm north of Wayne became their "home place" and their son, Lyle and family live there at this time.  The couple retired to Wayne in 1974.  Ernest died Oct. 27, 1991.  [Grone Family Reunion, 1993]  Dorothy died Nov. 24, 2003.

My Grandfather Ernest's parents were Bernhard and Bertha (Koester) Grone.  Ernest was sixth child (of 12!)  Here is the family prior to number 12:

Bernhard and Bertha were married in 1899 and both died in 1948, one year shy of their 50th Wedding Anniversary.

 

Bernhard Martin Christoph Grone was born May 8, 1874 in Ollenburg, Germany, the son of Hinnin Grone and Sophie Helmers Grone.  As a child he was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church.

At the age of 15 he cam to America and settled near Hooper, Nebraska.  In 1899, he was married to Bertha Koester in Dodge County.  Shortly after their marriage, the Grones moved to a farm near the old settlement of LaPorte in Wayne County.  A year later they moved to the George Berres farm south of Wayne where they lived for four years.  They then moved to their own farm southwest of town which was their home for 43 years.  In March, 1947 they moved into Wayne.  Bernhard died August 31, 1948 and Bertha died Dec. 18, 1948.

  4. Dora Louise Grone Otteman (born 7 Jun 1906, Wayne, Nebraska and died 21 Mar. 1969, Hartington, Nebraska)

  5. George Heinrich Grone (born 18 Apr. 1908, Wayne, Nebraska and died 15 Feb. 1983, Norfolk, Nebraska)
