Boren Lore

(There is at least a glimmer of truth in every story.)

It has been said of President Boren……….

President Boren was a very gregarious, outgoing athletic man with a very broad smile. He and Sister Boren were originally from Argentina, but had lived in Arizona for many years. He was an accountant with the government.
He had been a professional soccer player in his younger days. He would go out onto the beach with us and play soccer. He was very good. At the end of the game he would kick the ball out into the ocean and say, "Well, Elders, I guess you'll have to go get the ball."
He was tall. He had white hair and was very fair complected. Sister Boren was full of energy. She worked hard in the various Relief Societies in the mission. She was not in good health, though. She had polio when she was young.
Sister Boren didn't like us to drink sodas. They weren't good for us. And when I worked in the office, she didn't like us to drink sodas out of the bottle. She didn't want them sitting on our desks. She was always very concerned about the elders.
Sister Boren put on a Christmas musical every year in Veracruz. When she found out I play the piano, she had me transferred to the Mission office so that I could be the accompanist. I told President Boren that would be O.K., but I didn't want to finish out my mission there. So he graciously let me pick my assignment. I told him I wanted to go to the most remote part of the mission -- Chiapas. At that time, it was very desolate. Only 6 missionaries there and only 2 in Oaxaca. I opened up Arriaga. I told President Boren that someday it would be the future of the Church in Chiapas because of where it was located. At that time I had a real vision of what would become of our work. Only 6 members there when I arrived. I hear it's a district now. Stakes in Chiapas. A temple going in to Tuxtla. Who ever would have thought.
Enough for now. I didn't mean to get carried away. Memories.
