and you live in a small apartment, then you might need to arrive at some
sort of compromise. This service in designed to help you fit your wishes,
common sense and judgement together in a search for your ideal pet.
If you are a "pet person" or someone in your household is,
then it is a game of Choose a Pet or have it choose you! Select, don't
settle. A pet is an important relationship within your home .
You have a better chance at a successful pet - human relationship
if you bring home a healthy pet whose background is known.
Stay away from sick, strange acting or wild animals unless you have a firm
foundation in pet and animal ownership and a good idea of health and legal
rules concerning these types of animals. It is wise to protect yourself and
your family from the failures inherent in the above situations.
There are at least three factors in determining if an animal will make
a suitable pet for you and your family.
1) The basic nature of the animal. There are more than 12,000
species of mammals, only about 60 are common pets; there are over 8,500
species of birds, of which only about 30 have been domesticated successfully.
Reptiles have even a lower ratio of domestication. When choosing a pet,
stick to the types that have been proven to make good domestic pets unless
you have a very good reason for trying another species.
2) The second factor is individual pet personality. This may
be determined by the breeding and/or by the methods used in handling the
animal from birth until you get it.. There are some traits which come,
it seems, from the genetic development of the breed; but most undesirable
traits come from improper handling. The best way to instill the traits
you prefer, is to raise the pet yourself. There are certain personailty
characteristics inherent in specific breeds and you can rely on breeders
and animal psychologists for this information.
3) The third factor which is important in the decision of whether
an animal should be your pet or not is you and your family. Here
are some questions which will help you make that determination:
- Ages and Personalities: What ages and personalities are all
family members? Be honest, don't leave anyone out. Select a pet that is
a safe and happy addition for all family members.
- Enjoyment: Do you most enjoy:
- Watching
- Listening to
- Playing or working with animals and pets?
- Think about these things when selecting a pet.
- Training: Do you enjoy training sessions and do you have time
for such things in your schedule?
- Differences: Different types of pets require different amounts
and types of training. Be sure you are aware of the responsibilities inherent
with each type and breed of pet.
- Space: How much room do you have and want to devote to the pet?
- Costs: How much money do you want to spend on the pet and the
costs involved? Figure in beginning costs, equipment, veterinary costs,
housing, maintainance, training.
- Other Factors: There are many other things to consider.
- How will this new pet react to:
- The weather in your area?
- Your schedule?
- Your family and friends?
- How will your family and friends react to this new pet?
- Which Species will you select?
- Cat
- Dog
- Bird
- Fish
- Reptile
- Farm Animal
- Exotic
- Male or Female???
- Purebred or Mix???
- Timing: When will be the best time to bring a new pet home?
